How do you know when your brakes need immediate attention?

For my e-bike, the brakes is one of the most important thing I don't and will never overlook because of the job it does for the bike. Whenever the braking feels soft, takes longer to stop, or I hear grinding instead of a clean catch, I get concerned immediately and look into fixing it immediately. Brakes is the only thing I wouldn't put off for later for any reason whatsoever.
