Why do battery percentages sometimes seem inaccurate?

I see many people complain that batteries seem to be sitting at a certain percentage for a long time, then it starts dropping rapidly near the end of a ride. When this happens, it can make range planning frustrating. How accurate is the battery meter on your ebike or escooter? Do you trust the battery percentage reading?

From my experience and observation, this only start happening when the battery have started degrading over the years of using the e-bike or e-scooter. It also happens with smartphone too and not only e-bike. When it becomes too obvious, it's best to replace the battery as quickly as possible.
